Apple Set to Launch AI Features for iPhones in China by May

Apple is gearing up to introduce its artificial intelligence features for iPhones in China as early as May, according to Bloomberg. The tech giant has established teams in both China and the US and is collaborating with local companies, particularly Alibaba, for its generative AI technology.

During a recent event, Alibaba Group Chairman Joe Tsai confirmed that Apple will integrate Alibaba’s AI technology into Chinese iPhones. While Tsai did not specify an exact launch date, reports indicate that the companies have already submitted their features for regulatory approval.

Apple plans to use Alibaba’s technology for on-device AI models, ensuring compliance with Chinese regulations by filtering certain content. Notably, these AI features will only apply to iPhones sold within China and will not function when users switch their device location to mainland China from other regions.

With declining sales in China—down 11.1% in the last quarter—Apple is motivated to enhance its offerings to compete with local brands like Huawei and Xiaomi. The collaboration with Baidu for additional features highlights Apple’s commitment to regain its footing in this crucial market.
