Elon Musk’s AI startup, xAI, is set to utilize 15 gas turbines to power its “Colossus” supercomputer in Memphis, Tennessee, as revealed by an operating permit from the Shelby County Health Department. This permit allows for continuous operation from June 2025 to June 2030.
However, environmental concerns are mounting. The turbines, which are over 20 years old, emit hazardous air pollutants (HAP), including formaldehyde, at levels surpassing the EPA’s annual cap. Each turbine reportedly emits 11.51 tons of HAP annually, affecting approximately 22,000 residents living within five miles of the facility. ️
Critics, including Eric Hilt from the Southern Environmental Law Center, have raised alarms about the lack of transparency and oversight, noting that the turbines have been operating since summer 2024 without public notice. The health department mentioned that the permits are still under review, with no timeline for approval in sight.
