OpenAI Board Unanimously Rejects Elon Musk’s $97.4 Billion Offer

OpenAI’s board of directors has officially rejected Elon Musk’s proposal to purchase the company for $97.4 billion. In a statement on X, chair Bret Taylor emphasized, “OpenAI is not for sale, and the board has unanimously rejected Mr. Musk’s latest attempt to disrupt his competition.”

Musk’s bid comes during a critical transition for OpenAI as it shifts towards a for-profit model. CEO Sam Altman humorously responded on X, “No thank you, but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.”

In a recent court filing, Musk’s lawyers indicated he would withdraw his offer if OpenAI commits to remaining a nonprofit. However, Taylor dismissed this possibility, asserting that any reorganization will enhance the nonprofit’s mission to benefit all of humanity. ✨
