The CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS), a prestigious public health training program, is facing severe cuts as the Trump administration continues its efforts to reduce the federal workforce. Reports indicate that up to half of the EIS officers may be terminated, leaving the program in disarray.
EIS, established in 1951, has played a crucial role in managing public health crises, including the eradication of smallpox and responses to outbreaks like Ebola. Former CDC officials have expressed deep concerns over the cuts, with Dr. Anne Schuchat stating, “The country is less safe.”
Approximately 1,270 staff members are expected to be cut from the CDC, amounting to around 10% of the agency’s workforce. Experts warn that these reductions could hinder critical investigations into emerging health threats.
