Shipping Delays and New Charges Loom After Trump’s China Tariffs

In the wake of President Trump’s recent tariffs on Chinese goods, major US shipping companies are warning of potential delays and disruptions, although detailed policies on new fees have yet to be announced. As of now, importers and recipients are already facing requests for additional handling charges and import taxes.

Trump’s ten percent tariff, enacted on Tuesday, also eliminated the ‘de minimis’ exemption, previously allowing shipments valued under $800 to bypass import duties. This change affects an estimated 1.6 billion shipments to the US, resulting in new inspections and paperwork for previously duty-free items.

While couriers like UPS and the US Postal Service have acknowledged possible delays, FedEx has not commented on any risks. DHL has admitted that extra fees may apply, with some consumers already reporting requests for import duties. One retailer, Qwertykeys, has even paused shipments from China due to a new requirement for a 50% tariff deposit and additional processing fees.

As logistics companies adjust, consumers may ultimately bear the financial burden, with studies suggesting a potential price increase of 40-55%.
