The Guardian Media Group has announced a partnership with OpenAI, marking a significant step in the integration of journalism and artificial intelligence. This collaboration will allow The Guardian’s reporting to be featured as a news source within ChatGPT, including article excerpts and summaries. In exchange, OpenAI will grant The Guardian access to ChatGPT Enterprise, which the newspaper plans to leverage for developing new products and features.
Keith Underwood, COO of the Guardian Media Group, stated, “This partnership reflects the value of our award-winning journalism, expanding our reach to new audiences.” This move positions The Guardian alongside other major publishers that have recently collaborated with OpenAI, following a wave of similar partnerships since 2023.
The Guardian has been proactive in exploring generative AI, even publishing its approach to the technology last year. This announcement comes on the heels of a lawsuit filed by a coalition of publishers, including The Guardian, against a startup for alleged misuse of copyrighted materials. ️
