US Lawmakers Push to Ban DeepSeek AI Chatbot from Government Devices

Two U.S. Congress members are set to introduce bipartisan legislation aimed at banning China’s DeepSeek AI chatbot from government devices, citing serious national security concerns. Representatives Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) and Darin LaHood (R-IL), senior members of the House Select Committee on Intelligence, will unveil the “No DeepSeek on Government Devices Act.” This initiative arises after security experts revealed that DeepSeek could pose a risk not only to U.S. AI stocks but also to national security.

An independent analysis from Feroot Security claims DeepSeek’s code sends user data directly to the Chinese government-owned China Mobile. “We see direct links to servers in China,” said analyst Ivan Tsarynny. The U.S. Navy and NASA have already prohibited the app, and Texas is the only state to have banned it from government devices. Other countries, including Italy, South Korea, and Australia, have also taken preemptive actions against DeepSeek.

LaHood emphasized the alarming threat, warning against allowing a CCP-affiliated company access to sensitive data. Meanwhile, Gottheimer stressed the need to investigate DeepSeek’s activities to protect national security.
