New iOS App Walkstar Pauses Music When You Stop Moving

A new iOS app called Walkstar, launched Tuesday in the App Store, is designed to motivate users to stay active by syncing music with their movement. The app, created by developer Greg Gardner, pauses songs when users stop walking or running and resumes playback once they start moving again. Gardner, known for developing the popular Launcher widget, was inspired by an online post showcasing a retro Sony Walkman combined with a pedometer, which played music only while the user was walking.

Walkstar features a retro-style interface that mimics a portable cassette player, complete with nostalgic tape hiss sounds when music starts. The app also includes Game Center integration for leaderboards and achievements, a Live Activity widget for tracking steps and distance, and Shortcuts support for starting and stopping walking sessions. While the app is free to download, a Premium subscription offers additional features like customizable app icons, cassette tape covers, and detailed analytics such as step count and walking history.

Currently, Walkstar is compatible only with Apple services, including Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, Apple Books, and iTunes, as well as manually loaded music. However, Gardner is exploring integrations with other music-streaming platforms, with Spotify being the first target. A test version featuring Spotify is already under review in the App Store, and Gardner hopes it will be approved in the coming months.

Looking ahead, Gardner plans to introduce more social features, allowing users to share progress and compete with friends. If the app gains enough popularity, an Android version may also be developed. Walkstar is now available for download, offering a unique and fun way to stay motivated while staying active.
